Update 07-09-06
The band with new drummer Chris Stevenson played the Raleigh, Downtown Live
show last night. They started with "Slackjawed" and ended with the usual set closer
-- instantly recognizable to the many Connells fans in attendance at the show --
"Stone Cold Yesterday." Doug was in fine voice and the band had a great time. There
was a good enthusiastic and appreciative crowd of a few thousand people in
attendance in the park.
It was a fun, outdoor show with many families and younger Connells fans in
attendance as well as older fans. The band was introduced as "Raleigh's favorite
band." There were excited hometown fans in attendance who had made signs for the
band, most notably "I Heart Doug!" and "Wake County Loves The Connells!" The Set
list for the show included (as close to the actual order as we can remember):
- Slackjawed
- Carry My Picture
- Running Mary
- Fun and Games
- Something to Say
- Choose a Side
- Scotty's Lament
- Back in Blighty
- '74-'75
- Over There
- Crown
- Get a Gun
- Maybe
- Stone Cold Yesterday
The crowd was very enthusiastic for '74 '75, Scotty's Lament, and Stone Cold
Yesterday. Several people screamed for Get a Gun. And there were more Connells T-
shirts in a crowd than I have
ever seen before. It was a hoot to walk around after the show and see so many
people in Connells T-shirts. We even noticed a few bumperstickers.
Doug was great. He made fun of a giant sculpted acorn in the park. And told a fan in
a Beatles T-shirt that he was "the one." Right after telling some other concert goer
that he was "the man" for his t-shirt. Of course, Mike hooted and raised his arm for
the guy in the Beatles T-shirt. Doug kept going down "into the moat" -- the space
between the stage and fans -- to grab some colored beach balls that people were
throwing around.
After the show, both Mike and Doug said that they have worked up new songs. Mike
said that he had several new songs to bring to the band in addition to newly worked
up versions of "Really Great" and "Stars." David said that he wants to make a new
record and would set anything aside to help made it happen. We will add pictures
from the show soon.
Update 07-08-06
After speaking to Ed Morgan, the band is currently working on which Warner Music
label will collaborate with the guys to re-release their catalog. Right now negotiations
are ongoing with Rykodisc and Rhino Records over which company the band will work
with on this. So, while in the past we thought that the contract was complete,
suddenly some executives at Rhino entered the discussions. It is great to see such
interest in the band in 2006! More information as soon as we get it.
Don't forget about the show tonight in Raleigh, NC.
Here is an article that was written about the show.
Update 05-11-06
We have three shows coming up...
1. Saturday, June 3rd -- an outdoor show in Atlanta at the Virginia Highlands Festival
which will be held in the John Howell Park. More info at http://www.vahi.
org/summerfest
2. Friday, June 9th -- a free outdoor show in Norfolk, VA playing Harborfest. The guys
are supporting Sugar Ray.
3. Saturday, July 8th in Raleigh as part of Raleigh Downtown Live series. The guys
play before the Spin Doctors. This is a decent sized multi-band bill. The band is really
looking forward to these shows. Mike said to me that he "can't wait to get out and
play."
The deal with Rykodisc is done, everything is OK. The only thing holding up the
releases from their originally scheduled dates is the finalizing of packaging. Ring is
complete and the artwork is all done. The compilation which has a great working title
of "Another Souvenir: The Collection" is nearly done. The track list is done and the
band is working on artwork right now. I will try and get the details on that tonight or
tomorrow from Ed Morgan.
Update 04-15-06
- The Connells will play a benefit for the Loaves and Fishes fundraiser on 4/29/06 at Tara Farm
in Raleigh. The rain date is on 4/30. Go to the links page for more information.
The band's distribution for past and future CDs will be done through Rykodisk. Right
now the plan is to re-release Ring with bonus tracks and a Compilation CD of the
band's entire catalog which was originally scheduled for April 2006 so that both Ring
and the Compilation will be released on the same day.
After that, the other albums will be re-released in an order yet to be determined (more
than likely with previously unavailable bonus tracks). The band and Rykodisk are
finalizing the details for electronic availability of Connells albums and songs but it will
happen soon! So for those of you who have been waiting to get tracks and albums
through iTunes and other online services, that is coming soon!
Email Rykodisk and encourage them to release more Connells CDs soon!
Merchandising will be moved to a more reliable source in the new year. And there is
talk of some shows close to home in the new year so everyone should be on the look
out for announcements in the spring. The band is also open to playing some special
shows for fans sometime in the summer of 2006. We will keep you all up-to-date on
that as it comes together.
As several of you who have been to recent shows know, the band has written and
practiced a number of new songs for a new CD that has not been recorded yet. Some
of these may end up on the Compilation and others will be held back for a new record,
that band is still mulling over that decision. When they do go into the studio to record
a new CD, the plan is to go into a studio with a name producer rather than doing it
completely themselves.
It is also possible that a DVD of a show performed in Europe during the Ring tour may
also be distributed in the U.S. and Canada in the new year but that still has to clear
some legal hurdles.
Update 04-01-06
We here at OneSimpleBand.Net wanted to let you all know that the rerelease of Ring
and the new Compilation has been moved back to May 2006. The band hopes that
moving the release date back a few weeks will give Rykodisk time to do some publicity,
the band will also then be in a better position to play some dates to support the
rereleases, and to then stagger the rerelease of other records.
At this point the band is free of their former label TVT Records and can rerelease all of
the post Darker Days CDs (both Darker Days and Old School Dropouts were fully
owned by the band).
The band is finalizing some track selection but expect additional songs on the
rereleases for sure. Finally, pushing the date back is also connected to making the
music available online at that time as well.
Both Mike and Ed want to personally thank everyone for their patience as the band
has struggled through the laborious paperwork and legalisms to be able to rerelease
their catalog.
